While we are out driving around running our errands, picking our children up from school or driving home from work, there are some emergency situations that can happen to keep us from getting home for a couple of hours. The emergency could be anything from a traffic accident that blocks traffic, to your vehicle breaking down. Here are four essential items that you can carry in your vehicle that will make the wait more comfortable, especially if you have kids in the car:

Food

Carry some boxes of granola bars or cans of mixed nuts. These items will stay good in your vehicle for quite a while before you have to think about replacing them. These food items will help keep you and your children satisfied until you are able to get home.

Water

Carry at least a six-pack of water in your vehicle at all times. I learned this lesson really well when one summer day I was detained in traffic for 2 hours waiting for the emergency personnel to clean up a traffic accident. It was 108 degrees outside and I couldn't keep my vehicle running because it would have over-heated, so there I sat with my two boys ages 6 and 9 years old, roasting in the heat with nothing to drink, it was very uncomfortable to say the very least.

Blankets

Blankets are good to carry in your vehicle, in Case you find yourself stuck out there on the road and it is very cold outside. Chances are you are not going to be able to keep your vehicle running for very long to keep the heater on and when you have to turn your vehicle off it is going to get very cold. The blankets will keep you warm while you are waiting in your vehicle.

Video Games

Children get bored very fast. Carrying video Games and cards are a good way to keep children entertained while you are waiting for emergency personnel to clear an accident or until someone comes to help you to get your vehicle back on the road so that you can get home.

You never know what is going to happen when you are out there driving, you can be detained by an accident up the road, or your vehicle can break down, and you are going to have to wait until the accident is cleared or for someone to come and help you get your vehicle back on the road. If you carry these essential items in your vehicle at all times, you and your children can wait it out comfortably.

There are emergency survival kits available that are very handy and compact to carry in your vehicle. There are kits for adults, children and families, they have a lot of essential items in them to help you in various emergencies.
